Violence in the Workplace
Violence is one of the main causes of occupational injuries in
California. In construction, security is usually associated with equipment
rather than personnel, but employees deserve a safe and secure
workplace.
Some Facts
- A survey of national managers found that 52% had experienced a
threat or an actual incidence of workplace violence within the past four
years.
- The possibility of workplace violence has always been a threat, but
mainly for high-risk occupations such as police officers, and people who
routinely handle money.
- Increasingly, violent acts are seemingly triggered more from the
employees themselves rather than from an association with a particular
occupation.
- Usually, a violent act involves a disgruntled (ex)employee trying to
"get back" at a supervisor or the workplace itself.
It Really Happens
A plumber teased and taunted a framer on a Salinas construction site.
The framer tried to ignore him, but he couldn't take it anymore so he
finally yelled back. After the two exchanged a few more words, the
plumber approached the framer and threw a punch at him. A fight ensued,
and when it was over the framer suffered a severe knee injury that
required surgery.
Employer's Role
- Always take special note of disgruntled employees or ex-employees.
If an inclination is shown towards violence, proper procedures should be
taken.
- Make all workers aware of your employee assistance programs.
- Discuss workplace security hazards with employees.
- Set up a method for anonymous reporting of "troubled" employees.
Worker's Role
- Report any questionable behavior that would lead you to believe that
a co-worker is a potentially disgruntled employee.
- Be aware of your company's plan for reporting violent incidents.
- Take advantage of employee assistance programs when available.
